New Palace Theatre
Former hotel and variety theatre. Architects J T Wimpris and Arber. N Renaissance style with Art Nouveau details. Brick & terracotta with glazed tiled ground floor. Plain tiled roofs with brick & terracotta stacks; gabled dormers. Corner-site plan. 4 storeys & 3 storeys including taller "piano nobile" with 3 transomed windows. Theatre has central Flemish gable with pediment & 2 statues of Spanish soldiers standing against front face. Above left-hand painted panel are pair of lights & above other panel is ramped turret. 2nd floor bays have Barque panels over lights. 1st & 2nd floors have fine Art Nouveau panels. Ground floor has moulded elliptical arch; Frieze in entablature above ground floor of both buildings has original fine quality lettering and decorative detail.
Why is the site at risk? This building is in a very poor state of repair. All aspects require urgent attention to prevent further loss of fabric. The hotel end, to the east of the building is particularly bad, internally floors have collapsed, and externally some of the windows have now fallen in.
